Darrell porsche944@darrelldieringer.com Happy Customer

Hello,

I wanted to thank Peter from GDL for his great attention and extra effort in handling my repair. After calling and initially speaking to Peter, he was able to confirm that the cruise control system on my 1987 Porsche 944 was exhibiting a number of problems characteristic of a failing cruise control module.

I really needed my cruise control to work, since I was leaving on a week long driving vacation later that week. Peter assured me that if I sent the cruise control module to him via next-day carrier, he would turn it around and next-day it back to me so I could have it in time for my vacation.

It went out in the Monday morning UPS. By Tuesday morning before 11:00am Central Time (9:00am in CA), Peter called me saying he received my module, bench teseted it to confirm that it had indeed failed, performed the repairs, and was ready to ship it back to me. All he needed was my payment info to complete the deal! Wow! It arrived the next day, as promised.

I reinstalled it in the car that evening. It was the first time in about two years that my cruise control actually worked properly! It held its speed. It turned on every time I reached to set it. It turned off when I hit the brakes every time. I was thrilled!

Having a working cruise control made my several-thousand mile driving vacation so much more enjoyable, and the rapid turn around time for my repair made that possible!

Thank You,

Darrell Dieringer - Madison, WI

Neil email private MB cruise control repairs

Peter,

I regret to say that the repaired and re-installed CC is not working properly yet.

The cruise system works, and all the functions work, (cancel/resume/accelerate/decelerate, maintains set speed, and the coding plug must be OK as it will increase or decrease speed in 1 km/h steps by jogging the lever). However, it still surges. These surges are now very abrupt, (much more abrupt than when I first noticed a problem before the repairs), and last less than a second duration. The speed does not increase visibly on the speedo needle, but there is a strong acceleration (vacuum gage goes all the way to the right), and of course you can feel a pronounced "bump" until the surge passes and things go back to normal. This happens both on the flat and when going up or down hills. It can happen just once, or several times in a row.

The actuator linkage is clean and properly lubed with ATF, and does not bind anywhere. I used "Deoxit" contact cleaner on the connecting cable socket and plug, and on the connector to the amplifier, when I reinstalled everything.

Is there anything else I can do myself that might fix the problem, or do I have to send the amplifier back to you again?

Thanks

[GDL]
Good Morning, Neil,

I'm sorry to hear that. There are only a couple possibilities: 1) amp and/or actuator still isn't right or 2) the speed signal from the speedometer is corrupt. I suppose that 3) there could be a loose connector pin; that is the easiest thing for you to try. Contact cleaner does not help as much as actually slightly crimping the female connector ends with a sharp probe to make sure of a tight connection (at both amp and actuator.)

After crimping connector pins, if the system is still not perfect, to isolate the problem the easiest way is to send both amp and actuator back to me and I'll take them for a road test in a vehicle. As you know we didn't rebuild the actuator because it didn't appear to need it. Sometimes the actuators fool us by their nice appearance internally. After cleaning and adjusting we bench tested it and did not take it on the road. If amp and actuator perform well in one of our cars then it's probably a bad speed signal. During that road test we fail the unit(s) immediately on any sign of a malfunction. They must be absolutely perfect to pass the tests.

Regards, Peter

[Neil]
Thanks Peter,

What I will do is to crimp all the terminals and replace the speed sensor first, to exhaust all the things i can do first! I'll let you know in a week or so how it is going...

[GDL]
OK - thanks, Neil. I'll look forward to hearing from you.

[Neil]
Peter,

You will be as happy as i was to learn that a new speed sensor and crimping the terminals has worked like magic, and the system is now running like silk. No more surges, just perfect operation.

Thank you for your advice how to fix everything, and the fine work you did for me.

[GDL]
Hello, Neil,

I'm REALLY glad to hear that for a couple reasons...

1) I hate to think I might have done something wrong. I try extremely hard to have everything that leaves here be perfect and,

2) It's more than a little inconvenient for you to take it all out and send it back to us.

What did the speed sensor cost and was the installation tricky and/or expensive?

Best Regards,
Peter

[Neil]
The sensor cost $50, stock from Star Motors here in Houston. It took me an hour to remove the instrument cluster, replace the sensor, and put it all back in again. The sensor itself fits into a socket adjacent to the speedo shaft, and is held in place with a captive phillips screw. Not tricky at all, and cost me nothing as I did it on Sunday morning... I am happy you did your part, because now it will work for another 15 years, and it now works more smoothly than it did before.

Thanks again

[Neil]
Peter,

You are more than welcome to use my comments and our correspondence. You are virtually unique in that you have an organised and clearly written self-help explanation on what to do/how things work on your website, and then you are both able and willing to follow up/help people sort things out by both email and the phone. Thanks for the fine work and the help.

Roger rogrhein@nucentrix.net Re: Amplifier and Actuator

I am happy to report that the units arrived back, are installed, and the system works beautifully. Thanks for the quick turn-around.

Garth garth@rglobal.net Cruise control works

Hi, Peter,

I received the cruise control parts Monday, put them in last night and drove to work today--works great!!!!

I would have been more generous in my praise if I knew I was going to be quoted.

Hope you have/had a great weekend.

Thanks!

Ed ed@edscarborough.com Cruise Amp:)

Dear Peter,

Hoooooooray!!! Got the amp today. Upon first test, everything is working great! Cruise holds speed steady and one push increments raise or lower speed by 1 mph! Thank you so very much for all of your assistance. After a year of testing, questions, study and patience you have helped me unravel the mystery of a system that seemed to defy me (and many mechanics I asked) at every turn. GDL is truly a great company and your care and hand holding throughout this process was excellent.

Heading to I95 for a cruise...

Just thought I'd send you the following post I sent to Mercedesshop.com.

It's at http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=40865 [click on this link to see it]

Lewis email private RE: Cruise control amp.

Peter,

Got the amp and actuator and installed them this weekend. Everything works beautifully. It seems like a good system, I probably should have fixed this years ago. Thanks for your help.

Tom email private RE: Saab Cruise ECU

Peter,

Got my module on Friday evening and installed it and took it out for a test drive. It works well. Thanks for you help and for your information I sent an E-mail to TW at www.thesaabsite.com and told him of your capabilities. Maybe he'll contact you about some future business. I'll visit and post a note at www.saabnet.com about your capabilities as well. This site gets a lot of traffic. Good luck.

John NorrisJC@dot.state.sc.us 300D cruise amp

Peter,

I just wanted to let you know that the cruise amp for my 300D worked out great. I had one problem with the installation. When I first installed it the # 9 female pin on the connector/harness got pushed up and didn't make contact. I fixed that and it works like a charm. I will UPS the core today.

Thanks for all of the help.

Tom current email unknown Cruise control amp

Peter,

Just to let you know my cruise control now operates correctly. My only problem is, I forgot how it mounts up under the dash. I spent a good 40 minutes try to determine how it mounts. I should have drawn a picture, when taking it out. Thanks.

Ron ron@curtis.org Re: Mercedes Cruise Control Amplifier

Hi Peter,

Apologies for taking so long to respond but the cruise is fantastic!!!!!!! thanks for an impeccable job. I installed it the moment it arrived and checked it out on my way to my Tae Qwon Do class (5 miles) and it works perfectly.

Thanks so much for your wonderful efficiency. Would love to endorse your service, let me know when it's ready.

Again, thanks.

Dan flymac51@yahoo.com Re: Cruise components received

Peter,

I got the parts today, took about 50 minutes to get everything installed and buttoned back up. Hardest part was getting the kick panel back in :-). Then I took it out, drove in bumper to bumper traffic for about 20 miles until I could get to some more or less open road, and checked it out. That is one smooth unit. Thanks for the great service.

I would be delighted to endorse your business on your web site. Feel free to put me up there.

Peter,

This is a quick e-mail to thank you again for the service on my cruise control amp. It works perfectly! I'm amazed that you were able to "resurrect" it. I'll be sure to put in a great word for you when friends experience problems with their units.

Again thanks!
