Cruise Control System 1981 - about 1993 (14-pin Amplifier, Motor Actuator)
This system is a substantial improvement over the original VDO cruise control system. The original vacuum
system is in vehicles from 1976 through 1980. Some 1981 diesels have the vacuum system. The more advanced
motor-actuator, 14-pin amplifier system is in vehicles from 1981 through about 1993. The actuator is the
last component in the hard throttle linkage line.
The motor-actuator system, when working properly, is one of the best in the world. It is smooth and accurate; there
should be virtually no movement of the speedometer needle when the system is engaged. Furthermore there should be no
seat-of-the-pants surging and, in gasoline cars, the "economy meter" should make smooth changes. It is almost impossible
to manually hold road speed as accurately as this cruise control system.
